Middle School Race Team
This program is for skiers in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, and it has the same focus as the Ski Club's Instructional Ski Clinics. It runs Monday through Thursday from January 2 to February 23 with Mondays at Hickory Hills, Tuesdays at Hickory Hills, Wednesdays at Crystal Mt. and Thursdays at Hickory Hills. Hickory Hills training is from 3:30pm to 5:00pm, and Crystal Mt. training is from 4:00pm to 6:00pm (back to Traverse City by 7:00pm). The kids take a bus directly from East or West Middle School, SEAS or Glen Loomis to the ski hills. One race per week may be in lieu of training. The program cost for this season has been reduced to $350, and includes all costs to and from races, race fees, tickets, etc. The only other costs for this program are: a pick-a-day pass for Crystal Mt. (see form below) and a pass for Hickory Hills.
Currently the race schedule for this season is the following:
- Tuesday, January 17, at Nubs Nob
- Thursday, January 26, MS Invitational at Hickory Hills
- Thursday, February 2, at Boyne Mt.
- Monday, February 6, at Mt. Holiday
- Friday, February 17, at Crystal Mt.
Skiers must have their own helmet, skis, poles, boots, pole guards and face guard. Once a skier is 80 pounds they will also need shin guards. This is for safety reasons when training or racing Slalom (not needed for Giant Slalom, but all skiers will train and race for both). Athletes should have a helmet with hard, covered ears (not soft), as a mouth guard will only fit on this type of helmet and is safer anyway. All of these items can be purchased at local ski shops or online. Some skiers use different skis for Slalom and Giant Slalom, but this is optional.
Skiers are encouraged to participate in Sunday Races at Hickory, as this allows them to qualify for various regional ski invitationals against other clubs. Please note that this year Sunday races are included with Middle School Race Team registration.
