Grand Traverse Ski Club Coaches


GTSC prides itself on recruiting, training, and retaining some of the best ski coaches in Northern Michigan.  Our team has a broad range of skiing experiences, ski certifications, and racing backgrounds.  Many of our coaches grew up skiing at Hickory and were GTSC members.  We value their depth of knowledge, love of teaching, and encouraging words while instructing our skiers.  

Nicole Schroeder, Interim Director of Coaches

Austin Johnson, Head USSA Ski Coach

Coaching & Racing Experience:  15+ years coaching career with GTSC and has also coached at Antrim Ski Club, Shanty Creek Resorts, and Government Camp on Mt. Hood.  Level 200 USSA and CPR certifications.

Fun Fact: Grew up racing with GTSC and raced Nor Am and FIS races

Zack Mickowski, Ski Coach for MSRT and Instructional Ski Clinics

Coaching & Racing Experience:  Has coached at GTSC and Leelanau Ski Club and was a member of his Middle and High School Alpine Race Team after learning on the slopes of Sugarloaf.  Worked as a Ski Tech for the US Ski Team for 2 years.

Renee Huckle Mittelstaedt, Ski Coach for Instructional Ski Clinics

Coaching & Racing Experience:  PSIA Level 1, PSIA Childrens Specialist Level 1, GTSC coach since 2014 for Learn to Ski, Advanced Beginner and Instructional Clinics.  Raced for GTSC, USSA, Central High School and University of Michigan Ski Team. 

Off-Season Pursuits: Biking, swimming, waterskiing, traveling, singing, reading, and volunteering

Samantha Olsen, Ski Coach for Advanced Beginner and Instructional Ski Clinics

Coaching & Racing Experience:  Taught skiing and coached ski racers for over 30 years.  Coached Advanced Beginners for GTSC for the past three seasons. Hold multiple certifications with PSIA and have held certifications with USSA.

Hannah Schramski, Learn to Ski and MSRT

Coaching & Racing Experience:  Three years teaching Learn to Ski and private lessons. GTSC club and high school racer. Winner of the D1 Individual GS High School Championship Race. Current Club racer at University of Michigan.

Coaching & Racing Experience:  Raced with GTSC and continued on to race USSA races and in high school.  Prior GTSC coach.

Favorite Run at Hickory:  Swede to Waterfall, but his alter ego, the Sumo Wrestler, prefers the Birch to Buck pond skim.

Off-Season Pursuits:  Boating, swimming, and playing music with his son.

Coaching & Racing Experience: PSIA Level 1 certified instructor

Galen Walter, Ski Coach for Learn to Ski and Advanced Beginner Ski Clinics

Coaching & Racing Experience: Has over 40 years of coaching experience.  Has a PSIA Level 3 certification and raced on the USSA Junior National Team.

Christine Zoutendyck, Ski Coach

Coaching & Racing Experience:  Began her 20+ year coaching career with GTSC and has also coached at Antrim Ski Club, Shanty Creek Resorts, and Government Camp on Mt. Hood.  Has PSIA Level 1 and Level 1 USSA certifications.  Traverse City Central Alpine Team 3 Year Letterman and 3 Time State High School Ski Champion, USSA Racer.  Former GTSC Director of Coaches.

Fun Fact:  Coach Z grew up within walking distance of Hickory Hills and, like many GTSC kids, spent much of her free time as a kid at Hickory skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer.
